Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

Another reason to modernise is to bring older elevators up to today's strict requirements for accessibility taking into account the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 which required building owners to take reasonable actions to make their building complaint to the act by 2004.

There are several obvious requirements of the act that need careful consideration, the first being the lift entrance and the lift car size, both have to be able to accommodate a wheel chair. Additionally, the lift operating panel within the lift car has to have its buttons reachable from a wheel chair. Also for those with sight impairments and for those with hearing deficiencies, the press buttons on the lift's operating panel has to be tactile and voice annunciator is mandatory to confirm to passengers what floor the lift is landing at. A recent development for car operating panels are for the buttons to be programmed to respond to touch with movement (vibration) to confirm the call has been accepted.
